Recruiters see a lot of resumes on a regular basis and sometimes when things don’t sit well with them, they cringe. Here are some things to avoid so that you can avoid making your employer cringe.

  1. Too much personal information – Writing you age, gender, marital status or the very worst including your picture! This opens up the recruiter to possible allegations of discrimination.
  2. Using too many buzzwords – Such as ‘unique’, ‘hard-working’, etc. These are your own opinions on yourself and if you don’t have anything to back it up, it just looks like overconfidence and what does that do? Make them cringe!
  3. Being vague – When listing a skill be exact about your level and the tasks you can carry out with them. Telling them you have a skill and then turning out you just know the headlines is a huge turn off and honestly quite annoying. So, be specific about how much you know and if possible add certification to make it clearer.
  4. Listing your responsibilities – When you take over a position it is a given that you will carry out the basic duties so there is no point in listing that, instead write down what you learned and accomplished from it.
